Beginning Jazz Singing
with Joseph Della Penna: 6/19-8/14, 2003
This summer Jazz Pianist and Cambridge resident Joe Della
Penna again offers his popular "Beginning Jazz Singing" on
Thursday nights at the Cambridge Center for Adult
Education. "I love it," says Della Penna. "I get people
coming in from all over the musical spectrum - some with
lots of knowledge about jazz but not a lot of singing
experience, and some singers with pop or cabaret experience
who don't know much about jazz."
The class is designed for the amateur or professional
singer with some previous experience who wishes to make his
or her foray into the exciting world of jazz styling and
improvisation. "I aim to create a supportive environment,"
says Della Penna, "and we have a lot of fun." If you can
carry a tune, you are welcome to join this small workshop
class limited to 8.)
Della Penna has taught "Beginning Jazz Singing" class for
the past three years, and recently learned that some of his
CCAE students have been saying good things about his class
to one of his former teachers at NEC, Dominique Eade. Della
Penna came to Boston in 1993 to attend the New England
Conservatory of Music, where he received a Masters Degree
in Jazz.
He has played classical, jazz, and pop piano for over
twenty five years, and over the past four years has been
privately teaching piano, voice, composition and theory. He
is a member of the Boston Association of Cabaret Artists
(BACA) - a self-described "jazz interloper on the cabaret
scene" who also plays cabaret and musical theater
repertoire. He anticipates his debut CD, a live show from
the Zeitgeist Gallery, to be released this year.
